Church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross

A brief history

Franciscan friar Wendelin Hinterkeuser rebuilt this sanctuary in 1904 above a rediscovered medieval church. Its dedication commemorates Jesus’ condemnation and the taking up of the cross. The connection with this exact site is a later pilgrimage tradition, not an identification established by the Gospel text.

An interesting detail

The medieval church’s original dedication is unknown. The modern name arose because its large paving stones were once identified with John’s Lithostrotos.
