CHURCH BUILDING
Pro-Cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus
Jerusalem · Old City
A brief history
Built between 1862 and 1872, this church forms part of the Latin Patriarchate’s nineteenth-century establishment in Jerusalem. Patriarch Giuseppe Valerga consecrated it on 11 February 1872. Long called the co-cathedral, it received the title pro-cathedral in 2022 to clarify its relationship to the Holy Sepulchre.
An interesting detail
Its consecration fell on the twenty-fifth anniversary of Valerga’s episcopal consecration, linking the new church’s inauguration with a milestone in its founder’s ministry.
