History: Church of Saint Alexander Nevsky (Alexander’s Courtyard)

The Church of Saint Alexander Nevsky stands in Alexander’s Courtyard, a Russian compound in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, about 70 metres from Golgotha. Russia acquired the land in 1859, and excavations from 1881 uncovered a fragment of an ancient city wall with the threshold known as the Gate of Judgment, as well as remains of the basilica built under Constantine the Great. The compound was completed over the site by 1891, and the church was consecrated on 22 May 1896.

An interesting detail

The compound is named after Tsar Alexander III and was built by the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society.
