A brief history
Originally a Crusader church, the sanctuary was acquired by the Franciscans in 1838 and restored by Antonio Barluzzi in 1929. It commemorates the scourging of Jesus within Jerusalem’s traditional Way of the Cross. This devotional association does not establish the exact location of Pilate’s proceedings.
An interesting detail
Three stained-glass scenes connect the Passion narrative: Jesus’ scourging, Pilate washing his hands, and Barabbas celebrating his release instead of Jesus.
