Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation

A brief history

The present Greek Orthodox church developed in the eighteenth century beside an older underground sanctuary. Eastern tradition connects its water source with Gabriel’s greeting to Mary. The encounter while drawing water comes from the noncanonical Protoevangelium of James, rather than Luke’s description of the Annunciation.

An interesting detail

The wooden iconostasis bears Arabic and Greek inscriptions and the date 1767, preserving a material record of the church’s eighteenth-century artistic heritage.
