A brief history
Consecrated in 1969, this basilica surrounds a grotto venerated in Catholic tradition as the place of the Annunciation. Luke describes Gabriel’s announcement to Mary in Nazareth; the present building is much later.
An interesting detail
Architect Giovanni Muzio connected the lower grotto church and upper church through a central opening.
