History: Church of Saint George, Tulkarm

The Church of Saint George in Tulkarm is a Greek Orthodox church belonging to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Built in 1830, it has been restored many times, including by Greece in 1914 and 1942 and in a complete renovation in 2006; in 2015 UNESCO and the Government of Sweden restored two of its buildings. It holds a wall of icons made in 1943 by the Hellenic Army during its presence in Palestine in the Second World War.

An interesting detail

On 8 April 1949 the United Nations confirmed the church as one of the Christian holy places in Palestine, under the guardianship of the Greek Orthodox Church.
