A brief history
The well known as Jacob's Well, or the Well of Sychar, lies in Balata on the edge of Nablus and is enclosed today within an Eastern Orthodox church and monastery. Religious tradition has associated the well with the patriarch Jacob for a very long time. John's Gospel sets the conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at a well near Sychar; the association of that episode with this precise well belongs to Christian tradition.
An interesting detail
The well itself sits in the crypt below the church floor, so visitors go down to reach it rather than approaching it in the open.
