History: National Evangelical Church of Beirut
Beirut’s National Evangelical congregation was established in 1848, and its first church building opened in 1869 for Arabic- and English-speaking worshippers. The building near the Grand Serail was devastated during the Lebanese Civil War, leaving its clock tower standing. Reconstruction was completed in 1998. The church’s history is closely connected with Protestant education and community institutions in Beirut and with the National Evangelical Union of Lebanon.
An interesting detail
The surviving clock tower links the rebuilt church with the building that stood here before the civil war.
