History: Saint Joseph Jesuit Church, Beirut

Saint Joseph Church belongs to the historic Jesuit university quarter around Monot and Huvelin streets. Saint Joseph University’s chronology records the first Mass here in 1875, the year the university opened in Beirut after the Jesuits’ move from Ghazir. Father François-Xavier Pailloux designed both the church and the university buildings. The church therefore forms part of the nineteenth-century expansion of Jesuit worship, scholarship and education in the city.

An interesting detail

The same Jesuit architect, François-Xavier Pailloux, designed the church and its neighbouring university buildings.
