Saint George Maronite Cathedral

A brief history

Built between 1884 and 1894 under Archbishop Joseph Debs, this cathedral stands on the site of an earlier eighteenth-century church dedicated to Saint George. It is the cathedral of the Maronite Catholic Archeparchy of Beirut and sits in the city's downtown.

Saints & traditions

Its Neoclassical facade and interior draw their inspiration from the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
