CHURCH BUILDING
Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral
Beirut · Greek Orthodox
A brief history
Consecrated in 1764, this is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut and its dependencies. It is the oldest church still standing in the city, and was built over the site of the vanished Anastasis cathedral of Romano-Byzantine date.
Saints & traditions
Two cathedrals of the same dedication stand a short walk apart in downtown Beirut: this Greek Orthodox one and the Maronite cathedral of Saint George.
