History: Saint Mamas Church, Ehden
Saint Mamas, locally called Mar Mema or Mar Mama, is an ancient Maronite church in Ehden. Patriarch and historian Estephan Douaihy attributed its foundation to 749. Reused masonry and a Syriac building inscription preserve traces of the site’s long history, while the surviving fabric reflects changes across centuries. Its dedication honours Mammes of Caesarea, a young martyr of Cappadocia whose veneration spread well beyond his homeland.
An interesting detail
The Syriac inscription is part of the church’s material heritage, alongside the historical account preserved by Douaihy.
