History: Saint George Cathedral, Amioun
Saint George Cathedral, known as Mar Jirjis el Dahliz, stands in old Amioun. The Greek Orthodox church incorporates material from a Roman temple, while its apse belongs to the Crusader period. Its name refers to a subterranean structure reached through the church floor. Reused ancient stonework and later Christian construction make the building an important example of the successive religious and architectural layers preserved in the Koura region.
An interesting detail
An ancient Corinthian column capital was adapted as a baptismal font inside the church.
