History: Saint Phocas Church, Amioun

Saint Phocas, also called Mar Fawqa, preserves an important group of medieval wall paintings in Amioun. The church dates to the Crusader period, with frescoes on its apse, walls and pillars. Greek and Latin inscriptions accompany the painted decoration, reflecting the meeting of Eastern and Western Christian cultures in medieval Lebanon. Despite later repairs and alterations, much of the church’s historic character survives.

An interesting detail

The medieval painted decoration extends onto the pillars as well as the walls and apse.
