A brief history
Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral stands on Church Street in Tripoli’s Zahrieh quarter. Its foundation stone was laid in 1862 and the building was completed in 1873, supported by endowment income, donations and volunteer labour. The University of Balamand’s architectural survey records a restoration in 1999. Its basilican plan and lofty interior reflect the ambitions of the city’s nineteenth-century Orthodox community.
An interesting detail
The three aisles have separate dedications: Saint George, the Dormition of the Virgin, and Saints Peter and Paul.
