History: Dormition of the Virgin Church, Ras Beirut
The Orthodox church of the Dormition was completed in 1860 and consecrated on 18 February 1861. Before its construction, the faithful of Ras Beirut travelled to churches farther away in the city. The Rbeiz and Bekhazi families donated land for a church, cemetery and school. Education became central to the parish’s work: its schools served Orthodox children while also welcoming pupils from other religious communities.
An interesting detail
The first church was approximately thirteen metres long and thirteen metres wide, according to the parish history.
