History: Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, New Julfa

Our Lady of the Rosary preserves the history of the Dominican Catholic community in New Julfa. Its first church dates to 1681. Architectural historian Mehdi Razani records a larger church built in 1705, citing an earlier reading of its inscription. The building is associated with the Latin Catholic tradition, distinct from the Armenian Apostolic churches around it.

An interesting detail

French missionaries built a school in the Rosary church grounds in 1903. Razani’s architectural study places its opening around 1907, documenting the compound’s role in Catholic education.
