Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Cathedral

Abbassia · Cairo · Coptic Orthodox

A brief history

Built during Pope Cyril VI’s patriarchate, Saint Mark’s Cathedral became a major centre of Coptic worship in Abbassia. President Gamal Abdel Nasser laid its foundation stone in 1965. The new cathedral opened in June 1968 amid international church participation.

Saints & traditions

The opening accompanied the return of relics attributed to Saint Mark from Rome, an important exchange between the Catholic and Coptic Orthodox Churches.
