A brief history
Deir Mar Georges is a historic Greek Orthodox monastery in the village of al-Mishtaya, in the Valley of the Christians, Wadi al-Nasara, in Homs Governorate. It lies a few kilometres north of the castle of Krak des Chevaliers. The valley has been a regional centre of Christianity since the sixth century, and 27 of its 32 villages are Christian, mainly Greek Orthodox.
Saints & traditions
The valley's Arabic name, Wadi al-Nasara, means the Valley of the Christians, and the monastery sits within sight of a Crusader castle.
