History: Sacred Heart of Jesus Latin Church
Latakia's Latin church forms part of the Franciscan Sacred Heart of Jesus complex. The local church-community history records the friars' arrival in 1733 and a small convent and earlier church in 1829. The present church was built on 19 March 1933 by a French engineer, a separate phase from that nineteenth-century predecessor.
An interesting detail
In April 2015, the Franciscan complex housed a medical dispensary, kindergarten and reception centre for people displaced from northern Syria.
