History: Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George
Saint George Cathedral belongs to Latakia's Greek Orthodox archdiocese. After the destructive earthquake of 2023, the cathedral was restored and consecrated by Patriarch John X on 26 May 2024. The ceremony was followed by the Divine Liturgy, with Metropolitan Athanasios Fahd of Latakia and bishops from several other dioceses taking part.
An interesting detail
At the 2024 ceremony, Patriarch John X explained that the Orthodox consecration rite places relics of saints and martyrs inside the altar.
