A brief history
Youssef Makhlouf entered this Lebanese Maronite house in the Byblos district after beginning his training at Mayfouq, received the habit and the name Charbel, and made his final profession on 1 November 1853. He died on 24 December 1898 and was buried here on Christmas Day. Paul VI beatified him in 1965 and canonised him in 1977, and his tomb has drawn pilgrims ever since.
An interesting detail
The Maronite Church keeps his feast on the third Sunday of July, while the Latin Church keeps it on 24 July.
