Jerash Cathedral

Jerash · Byzantine church remains

A brief history

Known also as the Cathedral of Saint Mary, this church in Jerash is now in ruins. It was built on the site of a former Roman temple, one of several places in the ancient city where a Christian building replaced an earlier sanctuary. It is a preserved archaeological monument rather than an operating parish, and is counted separately from church buildings in this directory.

An interesting detail

Building a church directly on a Roman temple was a reuse of both the site and its stone, and the earlier structure is still legible in the ruins.
