A brief history
A tell is an archaeological mound, and this one rises just outside Ajloun in the hills of Gilead. On top are the ruins of a Byzantine monastery dedicated to the prophet Elijah, containing two churches. Elias is the Latin and Arabic form of Elijah, whom the first book of Kings calls the Tishbite. The ruins of Listib, across the valley, have traditionally been identified with Tishbe, the town the name points to.
