Synagogue-Church at Gerasa

A brief history

This building in the Decapolis city of Gerasa began as a Byzantine-era synagogue and was later converted into a church. It stands on high ground overlooking the Temple of Artemis. The synagogue beneath it is evidence of Jewish settlement in the Transjordan, and the site is preserved as an archaeological monument rather than a working place of worship.

An interesting detail

The conversion ran in one direction only here: the later church was laid out over the synagogue, reversing the orientation of the original building.
