Tel Megiddo, the Armageddon of Revelation

A brief history

Tel Megiddo is a settlement mound above the Jezreel Valley, occupied from the fourth millennium BC and commanding the pass on the road between Egypt and Mesopotamia. It is inscribed by UNESCO, with Hazor and Beer Sheba, as one of the Biblical Tels. Its place in Christian scripture comes from a single verse: Revelation names Har Megiddo, the mount of Megiddo, as the gathering place of the kings for the final battle, and from that Hebrew name English took the word Armageddon.

An interesting detail

The English word Armageddon is a place name: it is Har Megiddo, this hill, carried through Greek into Revelation and never translated back.
