The Hospitallers built this Crusader church over a spring at Abu Ghosh, a place medieval pilgrims associated with Emmaus. The Romanesque building retains three apses, a central nave and two aisles, with surviving medieval murals connecting its eastern and western Christian artistic traditions.
An interesting detail
The crypt occupies a former second-century reservoir, with the spring emerging in its centre.
