History: Saint Abraham’s Church
Saint Abraham’s Church is a Dominican Catholic church in Tehran. After the Vatican asked the Dominicans to return to Iran in 1962, Irish friars led by William Barden, later an archbishop, opened a house near Tehran University. The new Dominican house and church on Jamalzadeh Shomali Street opened on 23 May 1966, and the Irish Dominican province still staffs the church.
An interesting detail
The Dominicans chose Abraham, father in faith for Jews, Christians and Muslims, as patron so that the church would be a place of study and encounter between faiths.
