History: Saint Mary Church of Maralan

The Maryam Nanna church in Tabriz’s Maralan quarter is distinct from Saint Mary in the Ghala quarter. Nadereh Shoja Del’s architectural survey dates it to the Qajar period and records a rebuilding of the main hall during the Pahlavi period. Its cruciform plan combines a flat-roofed hall with a domed sanctuary. The Armenian Apostolic Prelacy lists the Maralan building as a Holy Mother of God pilgrimage church.

An interesting detail

The sanctuary dome has a twelve-pointed star pattern in its interior decoration, contrasting with the flat ceiling of the main hall.
