History: Saint John Church, Maragheh

Saint John, known locally as Hovhannes, is listed by the Armenian Apostolic Prelacy of Atrpatakan among its churches in Maragheh. Nadereh Shoja Del’s architectural survey traces the building to the Safavid period and documents a rectangular basilica with a wide central nave and two side aisles. In December 2016 the local heritage director described an agreement under which the Armenian prelacy retained ownership while the heritage department undertook maintenance and planned restoration.

An interesting detail

Two rows of three cylindrical wooden columns support its wooden roof, according to the architectural survey.
