History: Saint Mary Armenian Church, Bandar Anzali
Saint Mary’s Armenian church stands within a school compound in Bandar Anzali. Its entrance inscription gives 1874, as recorded in an original ISNA report and a photograph of the plaque. The report also notes that historian Aziz Tavili places its origins a few years earlier, so the inscription’s date is not treated as an uncontested founding year.
An interesting detail
In August 2023, a prelacy report recorded Archbishop Sepuh Sargsyan inspecting works in the church grounds and presiding at its liturgy during a visit to Anzali.
