CHURCH BUILDING
This Greek Orthodox church of Saint John the Baptist is a modern building at Al-Maghtas, the baptism site known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, on the east bank of the Jordan river. It was built in the early 2000s near the ruins of an ancient church; a 2004 grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation supported its construction and equipment.
CHURCH BUILDING
Mount Nebo is a ridge in Jordan rising about 700 metres above sea level, named in the Bible as the place from which Moses was granted a view of the promised land before his death. A Byzantine church and monastery stood on the summit, and the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land now cares for the site and the memorial church that shelters those remains and their mosaics.
BIBLICAL SITE
Above the Dead Sea, Machaerus preserves the ruins of a fortified Herodian palace. Josephus places John the Baptist’s imprisonment and death here.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Ancient Gadara, a city of the Decapolis, survives at Umm Qais with Roman monuments and Byzantine Christian remains. Its basilicas reveal a later Christian community.
