This modern riverside church developed in the early 2000s. A 2004 Stavros Niarchos Foundation grant supported its construction and equipment.

Nearby archaeological remains preserve a much older pilgrimage landscape associated with Jesus’ baptism.

Matthew recounts Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan. The present church commemorates that event; the Gospel does not identify this building’s location.
