CHURCH BUILDING
Memorial Church of Moses
Mount Nebo · Roman Catholic · Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land
A brief history
Mount Nebo is a ridge in Jordan rising about 700 metres above sea level, named in the Bible as the place from which Moses was granted a view of the promised land before his death. A Byzantine church and monastery stood on the summit, and the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land now cares for the site and the memorial church that shelters those remains and their mosaics.
An interesting detail
From the summit the view reaches across the Jordan valley to the West Bank, which is why the ridge is remembered as a vantage point rather than a destination.
