A brief history

Madaba is known for a remarkable concentration of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, of which the sixth-century Madaba Map is the most famous. The remains recorded here preserve mosaic floors from that same tradition, with the profusion of plants, birds, fish and animals typical of the town's fifth- to seventh-century pavements. This is a preserved heritage site rather than an operating parish, and it is counted separately from church buildings in this directory.

An interesting detail

Hundreds of mosaics from the fifth to the seventh centuries are scattered across Madaba, which is why the town is often called the city of mosaics.
