A brief history
Above the Dead Sea, Machaerus preserves the ruins of a fortified Herodian palace. Josephus places John the Baptist’s imprisonment and death here. Mark 6:17–29 and Matthew 14:3–12 recount his execution but do not name the fortress.
An interesting detail
The Bible supplies the story; Josephus’s Antiquities 18.5.2 supplies the place name. The fortress ruins are not a surviving church or an identified execution room.
