The seven churches of Revelation

The Book of Revelation opens with messages to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia (Revelation 1:11; chapters 2–3), all in what is now western Türkiye. They are listed here in the order Revelation addresses them. The messages speak to Christian communities; the ruins shown are those of their cities, and in most cases not buildings those communities used.

Philadelphia, today Alaşehir in Manisa Province, was founded in the second century BC by the Attalid kings of Pergamon and named after Attalus II Philadelphus, "the one who loves his brother". It stood on the road between Sardis and Laodicea and was prone to earthquakes; after a severe one in AD 17 the emperor Tiberius relieved it of taxes.
