BIBLICAL SITE
The Tomb of Daniel in Shush, ancient Susa, is the most widely accepted of the places named as the burial site of the biblical Daniel. The Book of Daniel places one of his visions at "Shushan the citadel" (Daniel 8:2) but does not say where he died; the tradition that he was buried at Susa is kept by Jews and Muslims, and was also known to Syriac writers.
BIBLICAL SITE
The Tomb of Esther and Mordechai in Hamadan is the most important pilgrimage site of Iran's Jews, and Iranian Christians also honour it. Local tradition holds that it houses the remains of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, whose story the Book of Esther sets at the Persian court in Susa (Esther 2:5–7).
BIBLICAL SITE
Susa, beneath and beside the modern town of Shush in Khuzestan, was one of the most important cities of the ancient Near East. Settled from about 4200 BC, it was the capital of Elam, and under the Persian kings it became one of the four capitals of the Achaemenid Empire and its winter residence.
