A brief history
Antonio Barluzzi’s church was completed in 1938 on a hill above the Sea of Galilee. It commemorates the Sermon on the Mount in a landscape associated with that teaching by Christian tradition. Matthew describes Jesus ascending a mountain but does not identify this hill by name.
An interesting detail
An older sanctuary stood farther downhill, near the road. Franciscan archaeologist Bellarmino Bagatti excavated its remains in 1936, before the modern church was completed.
