A brief history
The Greek Orthodox church was built in 1931 under Patriarch Damianos near the lake at ancient Capernaum. Later restoration and decoration renewed the sanctuary. It honours the apostles within the landscape of Jesus’ Galilean ministry; the modern church should not be confused with the ancient buildings around it.
An interesting detail
The monastery’s modern renewal included Byzantine-style wall paintings and cultivation of its grounds, combining the care of sacred images with the surrounding landscape.
Bible connections
Matthew describes Jesus settling in Capernaum. This passage concerns the town, not the twentieth-century church.
