History: Saint George Church, Spurghan
The present Saint George church at Spurghan was built in 1873 on the site of an older church. Nicholas Al-Jeloo’s architectural study records a Russian Orthodox phase associated with Assyrian converts and a return to the Church of the East in the 1920s. The building retains the sanctuary arrangement associated with that Orthodox phase, allowing its successive denominational histories to be read in the architecture.
An interesting detail
Its sanctuary has a semicircular apse and a freestanding altar, illustrated in Al-Jeloo’s field study.
