History: Church of the Virgin Mary, Mawana
The Virgin Mary church in Mawana, in the Targawar mountains west of Urmia, was rebuilt in 1879 after passing from the Church of the East to Catholic converts. Nicholas Al-Jeloo’s architectural study describes a stone church with a brick barrel vault, a single nave and a dome over the altar. His epigraphic survey also records nineteenth-century Syriac dedicatory inscriptions in its walls.
An interesting detail
Small side altars flank the sanctuary arch, a Catholic feature added to the layout of this mountain church.
