History: Saint Thomas Church, Balolan
Saint Thomas at Balolan is one of the old stone churches documented in Nicholas Al-Jeloo’s study of the Urmia region. The study associates this group with Sasanian architectural traditions, while treating their early dates as proposed rather than securely established construction years. A firsthand Assyrian Research Centre report records the Holy Qurbana at the named Church of the East building on 16 July 2018.
An interesting detail
Stone masonry and an arched vaulted roof are the architectural features that place Saint Thomas among the region’s older stone churches in Al-Jeloo’s survey.
