A brief history
Kuwait officially recognises seven churches, and this is the Protestant one: the National Evangelical Church, on Al-Shuhada Street in Kuwait City, with a membership of about 15,000. The other six recognised bodies are the Catholic, Coptic Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholic and Anglican churches. Recognition is practical as well as formal — registered churches deal with the ministries of social affairs, foreign affairs and the interior over clergy visas, building permits and police protection.
An interesting detail
Amanuel Benjamin Ghareeb, born in 1950 and a representative of this church, was the first Gulf Arab to become the head of a Protestant church.
