A brief history

Consecrated in 1888, this Russian church on the Mount of Olives was built in memory of Empress Maria Alexandrovna. Architect David Grimm designed it. Its dedication honours Mary Magdalene, the Gospel disciple; it does not mark an established location of her meeting with the risen Jesus.

Saints & traditions

Saint Elizabeth, who attended the church’s consecration, is buried here with the nun Barbara. Both were killed at Alapayevsk in 1918.

Bible connections

John 20:1–18
