History: Al-Tahera Church
Al-Tahera Church is a Syriac Catholic church in Mosul. The present building was constructed between 1859 and 1862, replacing an older church that stood beside it. It was partly destroyed by ISIL during the group’s campaign against Mosul’s cultural heritage between 2014 and 2017. UNESCO then organised its reconstruction, with support from the United Arab Emirates.
An interesting detail
Its Arabic name, al-Tahera al-Qal’a, distinguishes it from the Al-Tahira church of Qaraqosh, a different Syriac Catholic building in the Nineveh Plains.
