History: Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church
Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church is an Armenian Apostolic church on al-Tayaran Square, in the Bab al-Sharqi area of Baghdad. It was built between 1954 and 1957 on land the Armenian church had owned since 1904, which included an old cemetery, and the philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian gave large donations towards it. The reinforced-concrete building has an octagonal cupola with a band of windows, topped by a pyramid roof and a metal Armenian cross.
An interesting detail
Memorials to the victims of the Armenian Genocide were raised outside the church in 1990 and 2015, and paintings inside by Antranik Ohanessian depict its events.
