History: Chaldean Cathedral of Saint Joseph

The Chaldean Cathedral of Saint Joseph, known in Arabic as Mar Yusif, is the cathedral of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate of Baghdad. By the mid-twentieth century most of the city’s Christians had moved from the old Agd al-Nasara quarter to Karrada, so Patriarch Joseph Ghanima laid a foundation stone here on the Feast of the Holy Cross in 1952 and consecrated the cathedral in 1956. Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako was enthroned here, and the building was last renovated in 2018.

An interesting detail

Over the entrance stands a statue of Saint Joseph, with the cathedral’s name inscribed in Syriac on one side, in Arabic on the other and in English on the bell tower.
