Saint Catherine’s Monastery

A brief history
Emperor Justinian commissioned this fortified monastery in the sixth century for monks already living in Sinai. Its churches, manuscripts and art preserve a long Greek Orthodox tradition. The community venerates relics of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose name became associated with the monastery.
An interesting detail
A medieval Fatimid mosque stands within the Christian monastery complex, alongside its churches and library.
Bible connections
The monastery preserves the traditional site of Moses and the Burning Bush. Exodus tells the biblical encounter; the surviving monastery was built centuries later.
